Introduction

Following the welcome and briefing, all participants will attend a Safer Driving Workshop led by two highly experienced road safety professionals.

Workshop topics include:

  • Speed awareness – understanding appropriate speeds (30s/40s) and conversely making progress (60s/70s)
  • Road signs – recognition and interpretation
  • Roundabouts – including spiral layouts, mini-roundabouts, and lane discipline
  • Hazard perception and observation techniques
  • Driver assistance technologies in modern vehicles – such as collision warning systems, adaptive cruise control and eCall emergency response systems

These subjects have been identified as key areas of concern for many older drivers.

Kick Plate / Ice Hill

The Kick Plate is a movable metal plate set into the road surface. Activated remotely as a car passes over it, the plate simulates sudden loss of traction, allowing participants to experience and respond to skidding in a safe, controlled environment.

The Ice Hill simulates driving on sheet ice using a combination of a slope and water jets. This exercise helps participants understand vehicle control under extreme conditions and demonstrates how ABS (Anti-lock Braking Systems) function in real-time.

Observed Drive

This is not a driving test or formal assessment. Instead, it's an opportunity to drive a pre-planned route that includes a variety of road types, all under the guidance of an Approved Driving Instructor.

During the drive, the instructor will offer tips and advanced driving techniques to help participants improve their anticipation, awareness, and overall confidence. Particular focus is placed on roundabout navigation (including spiral layouts and lane discipline), which many older drivers find challenging.

Each session element runs for approximately 80 minutes. Participants will drive vehicles provided by our partners, including the chance to experience a fully electric vehicle.
